Here is the simplified vocabulary for engineering leaders. Practical explanation to fluffy management words.
To micromanage - tell them exactly what to do with minimal context.
To empower - give them support, autonomy, and context (business, product), so they can use their skills and potential to solve customers' problems and maximize the company's success.
Missionary - an individual who uses their skills and potential to solve customers' problems and maximize the company's success.
Mercenary - an individual who does tasks without reflection and understanding the context.
Strategy - the plan to solve identified problems to take you to where you want to be.
Tactics - granular steps - tasks, actions that get you to the place defined by strategy. The tactic is an implementation of the strategy.
Performance review - review of an employee's work in the context of outcomes and results rather than effort and intentions.
Priorities - a wrong form of the word "priority". It should be either "a priority" - a single most important thing to do. Or "prioritized list of ..." - a list of items with a precise importance level - 1st item is more important than the 2nd. The 2nd is more important than the 3rd.
Manager - a person who ensures things work according to the plan. That can be processes, culture, systems, etc. Managers ensure people follow the rules.
Leader - a person who turns vision into reality. An individual who creates the plan or inspires others to create one. They see needs or opportunities in the future and make them tangible today. Leaders create the rules.
